OBJECT (Object of Sunset) stands apart for the extraordinary character of its primary physical component: the wooden stump of a carob tree, a truncated shape that resembles a severed limb and provides a constant reminder of the axe blows that irrevocably transformed living nature into inert, dead form. At the same time, the shiny, blatantly artificial red paint applied to its uncannily wrinkled surface, which creases at the bend like human flesh, counters the deadening truncation, animating the stump and giving it bloody, pulsing life.Anne Umland on Joan Miro.
